“The Flying Schoolgirl”

Katherine Stinson was the fourth woman to receive a pilot’s license at age 21 in 1912.

She toured the US as a well-known exhibition pilot and was the first woman to perform “the loop” and skywriting exhibitions at night.

In 1917, Stinson broke the nonstop flight record between San Diego and San Francisco.

Rejected as a military pilot in WWI, she instead drove an ambulance for the Red Cross in Europe As a result of contracting tuberculosis at that same time, her flight career ended in 1920.
